The program's projected cost of £264 billion is a staggering amount that will be borne by the public, with the government planning to slap up to £198 billion on energy bills. This is a massive waste of resources that could be better spent on renewable energy and battery storage, which are proven and effective solutions for reducing emissions. The program's focus on fossil fuel-based schemes, such as hydrogen production from fossil gas, is particularly concerning. These schemes will actually increase emissions and rely on technologies that are not yet proven to be effective. The program's reliance on fossil fuel companies, such as BP, is also troubling. BP has a long history of funding and promoting climate research that downplays the urgency of the climate crisis and promotes the use of fossil fuels. The program's true aim, it seems, is to provide a gigantic, publicly funded reason for the fossil fuel industry to stay in business. This is a dangerous and short-sighted approach that will only delay the transition to a low-carbon economy.
