Red Sox Minor League Deal: Tayron Guerrero's Return to MLB Camp (2026)

The Red Sox are taking a swing on a familiar, albeit somewhat unproven, arm! It's not every day a team brings in a player with a bit of international flair, and that's exactly what's happening with the Boston Red Sox as they've inked relief pitcher Tayron Guerrero to a minor league contract. This deal also comes with a coveted invitation to Major League spring training, giving him a direct shot at impressing the coaching staff.

This move marks a return to affiliated baseball for Guerrero after he spent the 2025 season navigating the competitive landscape in Japan. He joined the Chiba Lotte Marines, marking his second tour of duty with the club. His first stint with the Marines back in 2022 was more successful than his most recent outing. Last year, Guerrero posted a 6.41 ERA over 19 2/3 innings in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), which led to him spending a significant portion of the season with their minor league affiliate.

Guerrero, who is now 35 years old, last appeared in a Major League game in 2019. In his MLB career, he's accumulated 106 innings of work, holding a 5.77 earned run average. Digging into his minor league numbers, he's allowed an even seven earned runs per nine innings over 117 frames at the Triple-A level. So, what's the allure? Despite the less-than-stellar ERAs, various organizations have consistently shown interest in Guerrero, largely due to his impressive velocity. He can consistently touch 99 MPH with his fastball, a trait that often makes teams willing to overlook command issues. But here's where it gets controversial... is raw velocity enough to overcome a history of control problems at the highest level?

This Colombian-born pitcher will get his chance to showcase his talents in Red Sox camp. While it's highly unlikely he'll be ready for an Opening Day roster spot, he'll have the opportunity to put himself on the radar for a potential midseason call-up. This would depend on him making a strong impression during exhibition games and performing well with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.

What do you think? Is Guerrero's fastball enough to overcome his command issues, or is this just another depth signing with little upside? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
