The 2023 season saw the emergence of L'Jarius Sneed and Trent McDuffie as one of the best NFL cornerback duos, with their ability to play man coverage on any boundary or slot receiver. However, with the departure of key players like Tyrann Mathieu and Daniel Sorensen, the Chiefs are now looking to fill the gaps in their secondary. The team has made a flurry of moves to replace their talent, including the signing of safety Alohi Gilman and the drafting of cornerbacks Mansoor Delane and Jadon Canady. While Gilman and Delane are expected to be instant high-impact starters, the questions remain about the other spots in the defensive backfield. The competition for the boundary cornerback spot opposite Delane is fierce, with Sneed, Nohl Williams, and Kristian Fulton all in the running. Williams, an intelligent player who excels in underneath zones, is the favorite to start, but Fulton and Sneed are also capable of supplanting him. In the slot, the Chiefs have more depth, with Kohou, Canady, and Rolland-Wallace all in the mix. However, with Kohou coming off an injury and Canady an undersized rookie, the starting spot is up for grabs. At safety, the Chiefs have a clear-cut starter in Gilman, with Conner moving back to his more natural position. However, the competition for the other safety spot is fierce, with Hicks and Conner both in the running. Overall, while the Chiefs' secondary may not be their most talented, the competition and depth ahead of the 53-man roster cutdown give Spagnuolo plenty of options to tinker with and build the defense around.
