Ducati's Dominant Display: A Wake-Up Call for MotoGP Rivals
The MotoGP paddock was buzzing with excitement as testing commenced in Sepang, but Ducati's performance on Thursday sent shockwaves through the competition.
While most teams were smiling and optimistic, Ducati's serious approach left its rivals contemplating the future. Reigning world champion Marc Marquez, known for his dominance since 2025, took a cautious route due to a shoulder injury. However, his brother Alex and Francesco Bagnaia, still seeking a 2027 contract, delivered spine-chilling sprint simulations that sent a chill down the spines of their competitors.
But here's where it gets controversial... Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola joked, "If we take Pecco's [Bagnaia's] simulation as a reference, the rest of us might as well pack up and start planning for 2027." Bagnaia, who finished fifth, half a second behind Alex Marquez's benchmark, commented, "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We need to wait until Thailand to conclude that the 2025 issues are truly behind us."
Alex Marquez added, "I'm happy; I think we're a bit faster than last year." His best lap time (1m56.4s) was remarkably close to the absolute track record. Meanwhile, his older brother, three tenths slower in fourth, continued to focus on his fitness ahead of the season opener, stating, "Everything is on track."
And this is the part most people miss... While Ducati asserted its dominance, establishing a clear hierarchy among the remaining contenders is a challenging task. Aprilia, more reliant than ever on Marco Bezzecchi, last season's third-place finisher, finds itself in a risky position with all its eggs in one basket. Jorge Martin, already on his way out of the team, hopes to return in Thailand once his injuries heal.
Looking at Bezzecchi's sprint simulation, it's unclear if Aprilia has the edge over KTM. Pedro Acosta appeared noticeably more competitive. Bezzecchi's time attack in the morning didn't quite pan out, but he tried again in the afternoon, securing second place overall, just a tenth behind Alex Marquez.
Honda, on the other hand, is playing down expectations. Up until testing, it seemed reasonable to believe Honda was on an upward trajectory, moving up the concessions ladder last year. But Thursday's performance forced HRC to recalibrate. Joan Mir's eighth-fastest time, eight tenths off the pace, doesn't reflect the RC213V's true potential. Data suggests Honda's race pace is slightly worse than Aprilia's and KTM's, although they've narrowed the gap compared to 2025. Fixing their grip issues is Honda's primary focus heading into the season.
Mir explained, "Targeting Ducati would be a mistake. We're still far behind, and they've continued to improve. We're aware of our grip limitations, and that's where we need to make the most gains." Mir was six tenths quicker than his teammate, Luca Marini, over a single lap, a gap that was also evident in their sprint simulations.
Honda's struggles were compounded by an engine failure on the #10 bike.
Now, let's talk about Yamaha and Toprak Razgatlioglu. His comments on Thursday evening perfectly captured Yamaha's current mindset. Those who questioned his signing, citing the vast gap between production-based racing and MotoGP, now seem vindicated. Razgatlioglu expressed frustration, stating, "They tell me to ride like I'm on a Moto2 bike, but it's easier said than done. It's not easy to see myself so far down." He finished 18th, nearly two seconds off the pace.
Razgatlioglu's frustration mirrors Yamaha's, which is largely due to the unreliability of its new V4 engine. This issue forced Yamaha to halt on-track activity on Wednesday for safety reasons. Alex Rins, the only rider from the factory team to complete the test, said, "Yamaha has asked us to ride carefully." Rins finished 1.1 seconds off the pace, and the underwhelming sprint simulation attempt by Jack Miller did little to ease the doubts surrounding the Iwata-based manufacturer.
