In an exciting turn of events, the Golden State Warriors are optimistic about their latest acquisition, veteran center Kristaps Porzingis, who is set to join the team in Los Angeles ahead of their much-anticipated matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night.
Head coach Steve Kerr shared his thoughts on Porzingis' potential availability, expressing some doubts about whether he would receive medical clearance in time for the game against the Lakers. However, he remains hopeful that Porzingis will soon be back in action and playing a vital role for the team. "I don't think we would have gone through with the trade if we didn't believe he could maintain his health and provide consistency in our lineup," Kerr stated confidently. "That’s definitely the plan moving forward."
This season has been challenging for Porzingis, as he has only participated in 17 games due to ongoing issues related to a complex illness known as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, in addition to recent struggles with left Achilles tendinitis. Despite these setbacks, Kerr emphasized the thorough assessments conducted by Rick Celebrini, the Warriors' head of medical decisions, and his team, who assured them of Porzingis’ readiness for this transition.
"When he’s at his best, he’s an exceptional player," Kerr remarked. "He brings the size, spacing, shooting, and rim protection that every team craves. To be honest, we've always needed someone like him since I’ve been here, and it’s rare to find a player with his unique skill set."
Before finalizing the deal for Porzingis, the Warriors had their sights set on acquiring superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. However, after realizing that their offer fell short of Milwaukee's expectations, they swiftly redirected their efforts towards Porzingis—who has been on their radar since his tenure with the Boston Celtics—and has an expiring contract worth $30.7 million.
Interestingly, Porzingis was initially included in trade discussions between the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks that involved sending Anthony Davis to the Hawks. According to league sources, this proposed three-team trade would have routed Jonathan Kuminga to Dallas while bringing Porzingis to the Warriors, but plans fell through after Davis suffered a hand injury.
As the deadline approached, the Warriors and Hawks managed to finalize a two-team trade, which sent Kuminga and Buddy Hield to Atlanta in exchange for Porzingis, without any draft picks involved.
Now joining a Warriors squad that stands at 27 wins and 24 losses, currently ranked eighth in the Western Conference, Porzingis arrives at a crucial time, especially as the team recovers from the recent ACL injury to star player Jimmy Butler.
Kerr remains optimistic about the team's prospects, stating, "We still possess a strong lineup. Even without Jimmy, we have the capability to make a playoff run. However, it’s important to acknowledge that our ceiling has undoubtedly lowered. I won’t sugarcoat it."
