Imagine a country battling its deadliest cholera outbreak in a quarter-century, with thousands falling ill and lives hanging in the balance. This is the grim reality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) right now, and the United Nations is sounding the alarm. But here's where it gets even more alarming: despite ongoing efforts, the response is falling dangerously short.
On February 11th, UN humanitarian agencies issued an urgent plea for a massive scale-up of aid to combat the DRC's worst cholera crisis since 1999. Since January alone, over 1,300 suspected cases and 35 deaths have been reported, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
While the DRC government, the UN, and partner organizations are working tirelessly, OCHA highlights critical gaps. And this is the part most people miss: the lack of funding for clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services is fueling the outbreak. Overworked healthcare workers, dwindling supplies, and limited access to treatment centers are further exacerbating the situation.
In a bid to stem the tide, the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocated $750,000 on Monday. This marks the fourth time since early 2025 that CERF has released funds proactively, aiming to get ahead of this predictable disaster and save lives. Last year's statistics are a stark reminder of the urgency: over 71,800 suspected cases and more than 2,000 deaths were recorded in the DRC.
However, OCHA emphasizes that much more is needed. Flexible and substantial funding is crucial to strengthen healthcare services, ensure adequate supplies, and monitor cholera-affected areas.
